WAYNE – The first of two home tournaments were held in Wayne over the weekend featuring Junior High boys basketball teams.
Saturday games began at the Wayne Jr/Sr high school gymnasium for the Wayne seventh and eighth graders during the W-Club Tournament.
In the seventh-grade division, Wayne defeated Battle Creek 33-16 but fell to Pierce in the title game (55-27).
In the opening game, Wayne was led by the seven points from Devin Anderson and six points by Kaleb Moormeier. Caiden Backer (five), Mason Ley and Ryan Karsky (four), Drue Davis (three) as well as Caden Wiese and Sam Junck (two).
From the championship game, Jase Dean paced all Wayne scorers with eight points, followed by Wiese with seven points and another six by Kaden Hunt. Anderson, Junck and Davis all added two points.
In the eighth-grade division, Wayne High dominated Battle Creek 46-5 before holding off Norfolk Catholic 37-29 to win their own tourney.
During the opening contest, Daniel Judd paced Wayne with nine points, Andrew Jones added eight points and Alex Phelps provided seven points. Other scoring came from Sedjro Agoumba (six), Carter Junck and Trace Jackson (four), Drew Fertig and Brooks Kneifl (three) and Calvin Starzl (two).
From the championship game, Judd and Phelps both poured in nine points, Kneifl added seven points and Jones tallied six points. Carter Junck, Agoumba and Jackson (two).
The Wayne Junior High boys basketball teams are back at home Thursday, January 31 hosting Clarkson-Leigh. Games are scheduled for 6 p.m.
