Wayne Competes With Partial Squads During Mid State Track Conference Meet

BATTLE CREEK – A full day of track & field was put on display during the rescheduled Mid State Conference meet.

From Battle Creek High School, Wayne High was one of nine girls and eight boys teams who were in action on Tuesday for their conference competition.

Head Blue Devil track and field coach, Dale Hochstein said, “with the postponements, Wayne ran a partial squad with several athletes gone to family activities and Wayne’s Final Music Contest. With the nicer weather and great competition, Wayne had numerous large improvements in events for those competing.”

The Wayne High girls track & field team placed ninth with 34 points while the Blue Devil boys took seventh with 32.5 points.

Pierce won the Mid State Conference girls division with 125 points, followed by Battle Creek in runner-up (90), Hartington Cedar Catholic took third (61), O’Neill placed fourth (57) and Boone Central rounded out the top five teams with 47 points.

Blue Devil girls leaders came from Jala Krusemark finishing third in both the 1600-meter ruin (5:55.71) and 3200-meter run (12:29.06) while Kyla Krusemark finished third in both the 400-meter dash (1:02.34) and the 800-meter run (2:28.17).

The Blue Devil girls 4×800-meter relay team of Faith Powicki, Kierah Haase, Jala Krusemark and Kyla Krusemark took second in 10:05.97 (corrected from earlier post).

Virginia Kniesche posted the best field event finish in seventh place during the pole vault at 7’.

Battle Creek won the Mid State Conference boys division with 124 points, followed by Boone Central in runner-up (96), Norfolk Catholic took third (86.5), Pierce placed fourth (77.5) and Hartington Cedar Catholic rounded out the top five teams with 64 points.

Blue Devil boys leaders were Sedjro Agoumba who posted runner-up finishes in both the 200-meter dash (22.96) and 400-meter dash (51.60) while Jesus Zavala took third in the 3200-meter run (10:27.80). Eli Barner had the highest field event finish in the pole vault placing fifth at 11’.

The top Blue Devil boys relay came during the 4×400 of Alex Phelps, Yair Alcantara, Colson Nelsen and Sedjro Agoumba in fifth (3:42.99).

The Wayne High girls and boys track & field team will return to Battle Creek for an invitational on Thursday, May 5 starting at 2 p.m. pending weather before the B-4 District meet in Columbus next Tuesday.
