Wayne Boys, Ponca Girls Being Carried On KCTY/KTCH On Tuesday; Area Teams In Action

LINCOLN – KTCH/KCTY will be covering the Wayne boys in Class C1 and Ponca girls in Class C2 but will also be providing updates under the local sports tabs for other northeast Nebraska teams.

The 2022 NSAA Girls and Boys State Basketball Championships will take place from Monday, March 7 – Saturday, March 12.

Both the Wayne boys and Ponca girls will be playing on Tuesday, March 8 at 3:15 p.m. at separate locations.

In Class C1 boys action on Tuesday, #6 Wayne (24-3) will open with #3 Kearney Catholic (25-1) from the Bob Devaney Sports Center. Pregame show coverage with Sports Director, Aaron Scheffler will be at 2:55 p.m. on The City ‘KCTY’ 98.9/1590 and waynedailynews.com.

WHS will be participating in their 31st state tournament (third straight) after placing fourth place last season defeating Kearney Catholic (59-52) before falling to Adams Central (52-40) and Omaha Concordia (60-46) in the C1 consolation round. The Blue Devils have won four straight this season.

Kearney Catholic is on a 19-game winning streak and are back in the state tourney for the 11th time (third straight) but have not won a first round game since 2004 (seventh appearance).

 

In Class C2 girls action on Tuesday, #5 Ponca (24-1) will open with #4 Crofton (22-4) from Lincoln Southeast High School. Pregame show coverage with Luke Stara is set for 2:55 p.m. on Big Red Country ‘KTCH’ 104.9 and waynedailynews.com.

Ponca has qualified for state the past four seasons marking their 11th trip in program history (sixth in the past eight years). The Indians have placed runner-up in Class C2 the past two seasons defeating GACC (59-45) and BRLD (55-37) last season before falling to Crofton (46-42) in the finals. Ponca has won 14 straight this season.

Crofton will be making their 20th appearance at state (fourth straight, 16th in past 18 years). The Warriors won their ninth state title in program history last season by defeating Ponca, 46-42 after earning wins over Centennial (62-37) and Bridgeport (66-48).

The two teams also met twice this season with Crofton winning 41-37 in Ponca on January 4 while Ponca won 52-41 in Crofton on February 17 during the subdistrict championship game.

D2 (Lincoln NE/Lincoln North Star): #8 Wynot (15-10) vs. #1 Falls City Sacred Heart (24-3) at 9 a.m. from Lincoln Northeast HS on Monday, March 7

C2 (Lincoln Southeast HS): #5 Ponca (24-1) vs. #4 Crofton (22-4) at 3:15 p.m. and #2 Guardian Angels Central Catholic (25-1) vs. #7 Oakland-Craig (18-7) at 6 p.m. both on Tuesday, March 8

D1 (Lincoln Southwest): #8 Hartington Cedar Catholic (13-15) vs. #1 Elmwood-Murdock (23-3) at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 8
