Walling Qualifies For State, Blue Devil Boys Golf Finishes Fifth

BLAIR – Boys golf teams in Class B opened the week with district competition.

From River Wilds in Blair, the B2 District featured 12 varsity teams Monday on the 18-hole course.

Team scores saw Omaha Skutt Catholic edge Bishop Neumann (329-333) while Bennington took the third qualified spot with a 345.

Mount Michael Benedictine placed fourth with a 361, followed by Wayne High in fifth with a 378, Douglas County West sixth (389), Blair (seventh – 397) and West Point-Beemer Scribner-Snyder (eighth – 407). Omaha Concordia (410), Omaha Roncalli Catholic (414), Schuyler (448) and Wahoo (457) rounded out team scoring.

Wayne High’s Tanner Walling punched his ticket to state with a 10th place medal. The freshman tied with senior Avery Sturtz of Douglas County West both shooting an 85.

Christopher Woerdemann shot a 91, Jonah Brodersen finished with a 94, Zach Urbanec (108) and Shea Sweetland (110).

Walling is the first male Blue Devil boys golfer since senior Kaje Maly qualified in 2014. Maly tied for 15th shooting a 154 (81/73) in two days from the Indianhead Golf Club in Grand Island.

Other extra qualifiers were district champ senior Teague Stewart of West Point-Beemer/Scribner-Snyder with a 76 and sophomore Luke Gutschewski of Mount Michael placing third with a 77.

Junior Charles Zielinksi of Skutt also shot a 76.

All 2019 NSAA Boys State Golf Championships will be held next Tuesday and Wednesday, May 21-22. Class B golfers will compete at the Elks Country Club in Columbus.

 

Class A from the Fremont Golf: thanks to an -11 from senior Luke Kluver to win the A1 District and runner-up finish from junior Jake Kluver (75), Norfolk High qualified their team shooting a 301. Another top 10 finish came from sophomore Isaac Heimes (82).

The Class A Boys State Golf Championships will be held at the Norfolk Country Club.
