WAYNE – A pair of Wayne State College female student-athletes were represented among their respective sport with NSIC Player of the Week honors.
According to a release from the Wayne State Athletics office, sophomore setter Rachel Walker was named NSIC Setter of the Week while sophomore goalkeeper Katherine Hageman garnered NSIC Goalkeeper of the Week.
A 5-9 sophomore setter from Lincoln (Lincoln Southwest HS), Walker averaged 10.86 assists per set while helping the Wildcats to a second-place finish in the Colorado Premier Tournament. Walker had a season high 54 assists during Wayne State’s loss to MSU Denver Saturday evening in five sets.
Walker was a part of a team that swept three top 10 teams over the weekend. She recorded 34 assists and three service aces in a sweep over #4 Lewis (Ill.) on Friday. Early Saturday afternoon Walker had a double-double with 33 assists and 16 digs in a sweep over #2 Angelo State.
She was one of three Wildcats named to the All-Tournament Team joining Taya Beller and Maggie Brahmer.
Wayne State College moved up 12 spots to #5 in Monday’s AVCA Division II Top 25 Coaches Poll and are 6-1 overall. WSC will open Northern Sun Conference play on the road this weekend at #16 Minnesota Duluth Friday at 6 p.m. and at #23 St. Cloud State Saturday at 2 p.m.
Hageman, a 5-10 sophomore from Golden, Colorado (Golden HS), recorded 11 saves Friday afternoon while helping the Wildcats to a 0-0 double overtime draw against the 24th-ranked Griffons. She faced 16 shots and six corner kicks in the contest while playing all but 4:19 of the 110-minute double overtime contest in her first start of the season.
The Wayne State College women’s soccer team is 0-2-1 on the season and will be at home Friday afternoon hosting Minnesota State-Mankato at 3 p.m. in the NSIC opener for both teams.
