WAKEFIELD – High school basketball teams from across the state will be in action with one or two games in a three-day period this weekend with four area teams being carried on air.
Wakefield will begin their season Thursday evening by hosting Pender along with their annual wrestling dual taking place as well while the Wayne High girls and boys Saturday game at Ponca will be covered on air. Both games can be heard on Big Red Country ‘KTCH’ 104.9 and waynedailynews.com. The Blue Devils open their season at home vs. Battle Creek Friday evening.
The Wakefield girls finished 13-11 last season, dropping five of their last six as they began the year with a 5-2 pre-Christmas record. For Pender, they finished 16-8.
Last season, Pender won the season-opener 54-53 in Pender while ending Wakefield’s season with a 69-47 Subdistrict Tournament victory.
The Wakefield boys were one win away from a trip to state after going 20-6 a year ago, which began with a 10-1 start through early January. The Pendragons went 3-20 last year.
A year ago Wakefield held on for the 53-43 victory at Pender.
Thursday’s schedule will begin at 4 p.m. with the girls JV game followed by the boys. Each game will play two, eight-minute quarters with about five minutes of halftime. Girls varsity action is scheduled to start around 6 p.m. but could be running ahead of schedule and boys contest will follow.

As Wayne High opens their season at home vs. Battle Creek on Friday, their Saturday game at Ponca will be carried on KTCH.
The Wayne girls are coming off a 7-19 season and as for Ponca, their girls team finished as Class C2 runner-up for a second straight year after going 21-5 last season.
Last year, Ponca won 53-34 in Wayne.
In the boys match-up, Wayne High is coming off a 23-7 season placing fourth at state in Class C1 while the Indians went 12-11 last year.
Wayne High secured a 49-22 home win over Ponca last year.
Friday night’s Wayne vs. Battle Creek Junior Varsity games will begin at 4:30 p.m. (boys at elementary/girls at high school), followed by varsity girls at 6:15 p.m. and varsity boys after.
Saturday’s schedule will then begin with JV games at 4 p.m., varsity girls at 5:15 p.m. and boys varsity after. Pregame show coverage on Big Red Country ‘KTCH’ 104.9 and waynedailynews.com with Blake Hilkemeier is set for around 5 p.m.
