Wakefield Girls Record Second Half Comeback, LHNE Boys Pull Away In Fourth

NORFOLK – The road-heavy early season schedule continued for the Wakefield girls and boys basketball teams for their eighth road game of the nine they’ve played.

From Lutheran High Northeast in Norfolk, the Trojans visited the Eagles Tuesday night during a Class C2 doubleheader.

The Wakefield girls defeated LHNE, 60-51 while the LHNE boys won 55-47 over Wakefield.

The Wakefield girls are now 6-3 as the Eagles fell to 4-5 while the Lutheran High Northeast boys have now won four straight to improve to 8-1 and the Trojans saw their six-game winning streak snapped to now sit 7-2.

During the girls game, LHNE led early thanks to an 11-9 first quarter before extending their lead with a 20-11 second quarter. The Eagles led 31-20 at the break. Wakefield then started to mount their comeback with a dominant third, 23-12 and outscored LHNE, 17-8 in the fourth. Final favored Wakefield, 60-51.

Wakefield was led in scoring by Aishah Valenzuela with 16 points, Alex Arenas added 14 points while MaKenna Decker poured in 11 points. Other scoring came from Destiny
Helzer with eight points, Jordan Metzler finished with six points as Daveigh Munter-McAfee tallied five points.

Leaders for the Eagles were Kendra Petersen with 18 points and Mia Furst with 15 points.

 

Form the boys outing, Wakefield took the early lead of 17-13 in the first as LHNE won the second, 9-7. Wakefield led 24-22 at the break. Wakefield again outscored the Eagles in the third, 15-8 before Lutheran High Northeast came from behind and won the fourth quarter scoring of 25-8 and the game, 55-47.

Wakefield was led in scoring by Cade Johnson with 19 points, Eliseo Sarmiento poured in 14 points as Armando Villa finished with 12 points. Hunter Schultz also scored two points.

Leaders for the Eagles were Cort McKeown with 19 points, Mason Peterson tallied 16 points as Keaton Ranslem added 12 points.

Wakefield will play just their second home game on the season when they entertain Woodbury Central (IA) on Thursday, January 6. The Lutheran High Northeast girls and boys will then participate in the Wausa Post-Holiday Tournament with Osmond and Niobrara/Verdigre between Thursday, January 6 – Saturday, January 8.
