Wakefield-Allen Volleyball Season To Begin With Gatorade Scrimmage Thursday

WAKEFIELD – The Wakefield volleyball program will jump up one class after Allen has since signed a cooperative-agreement to become Wakefield-Allen.

Competing in Class C1, Wakefield-Allen will have a combined girls enrollment of 71. In 2017, Allen posted a 13-17 record while Wakefield went 12-14.

Iris Borg is entering her third season as head coach and will be leading the Wakefield-Allen team this season. Coach Borg talked what the team has been up to recently.

“We focused a lot on the basics and the fundamentals,” said Borg. “Now working into more team stuff, getting to know each other and trying to get the line-up a little bit more narrowed down.”

The team did play together during the Northeast Community College Summer League entering fall practices.

Logan McPhillips is back from Wakefield’s team last year as Allen coaches will be Cheryl Greve and Brittany Eisenmann.

With the two programs coming together numbers are roughly the same of 34 girls out this year, nine being seniors. Coach Borg added it has been great having the Allen players and coaches in the gym.

“So far I think it’s gone very smooth,” Borg added. “The girls seemed to have adapted and coaches are getting along just fine, we have a lot of the same philosophies.”

The Wakefield-Allen volleyball team will be hosting a scrimmage on Thursday, August 23 at 6 p.m. where anyone is welcome to attend and watch as all the girls will have some time on the court. Coach Borg stated the reason for the scrimmage.

“If you’re up to it we’d love to have you bring some little bottles of Gatorade that we pack when we go to every away game,” Borg mentioned. “So, if you have some around we’d love for you to bring it otherwise, just come out and watch.”

Wakefield-Allen will still have a hefty amount of Class D1 and D2 opponents along with C2 games. But, the Trojans will join O’Neill, Pierce and Wayne for the Class C1-7 Subdistrict Tournament in late October.

The season gets underway for Wakefield-Allen on Thursday, August 30 and Saturday, September 1 during the Northeast Volleyball Classic hosted by Wisner-Pilger and Pender. The home schedule will start shortly after hosting Madison on Tuesday, September 4 and then the Wakefield-Allen Invitational on Thursday, September 6 as well as Saturday, September 8.
