Updated Rankings Posted, Wayne High Moves Up One Spot

LINCOLN – As playoff football gets underway for Class A, D1 and D2 this week, other programs across the state will end their regular season Friday and the Wayne High football team moved up a spot in each ranking.

According to a release from the Lincoln Journal Star and Omaha World Herald rankings from Monday, WHS is up a spot to #8 in the OWH and #9 in the LJS. The Blue Devils are coming off a 42-7 victory at O’Neill where the team did most of their damage in the third quarter scoring 28 points. Wayne High is now 6-2 on the season and will prepare for a C1-5 District showdown with the top-rated team in the state.

WHS will welcome in #1 Pierce on Friday, October 23 at 7 p.m. from Bob Cunningham Field on the campus of Wayne State College. The Bluejays are 7-0 and recently topped Battle Creek 70-12. Both teams are undefeated in district play.

Pregame show coverage is set for 6:40 p.m. The last Wayne High victory came in 1994 as Pierce has won 23 straight over the Blue Devils. Last year, Pierce won on their home field 42-0.

 

Another high school football game that will be carried on Big Red Country ‘KTCH’ 104.9 and waynedailynews.com this week will be a Class D1 playoff contest Thursday afternoon. From Hebron, Nebraska, #6 Thayer Central will host #11 Laurel-Concord-Coleridge at 2 p.m.

Thayer Central lost to #4 (both papers) Tri County, 68-22 while LCC dropped a 16-8 road game at #9 (LJS)/#10 (OWH) Lutheran High Northeast. Both teams were rated in the top 10 in the Lincoln Journal Star but dropped out in the final two weeks of the regular season.

Area rankings:

Class C2: Norfolk Catholic (5-2) is #5 in the OWH and #9 in the LJS. The Knights will visit ranked Hartington Cedar Catholic Friday.

Class C2: Hartington Cedar Catholic (7-1) is #6 in the OWH and #8 in the LJS. The Trojans will welcome in a ranked Norfolk Catholic team Friday.

Class D1: Wakefield (7-0) ended their season with a 64-41 win over Hartington-Newcastle and rated #5 in both papers. The Trojans are ineligible for the playoffs due playing down a class.

Class D1: Stanton (6-1) is #7 in both papers. The Mustangs will open the playoffs as the number three seed and will host #14 Exeter-Milligan/Friend (4-3) at 6 p.m. Thursday.

Class D1: Lutheran High Northeast (7-1) is #9 in the LJS and jumped into the OWH rankings at #10. The Eagles earned the #4 seed and will host #13 Elmwood-Murdock (5-3) at 7 p.m. in Norfolk Thursday.

Class D2: Allen (6-0) moved up a spot to #9 in the LJS. The fourth-seeded Eagles will host #13 Johnson-Brock (3-5) at 6 p.m. Thursday to open the playoffs.
