Blue Devil Girls Suffer Road Loss, Wayne Boys Win Seventh Straight

WEST POINT – With holiday basketball tournaments set to take over late December, the Wayne High girls and boys basketball teams closed out their pre-Christmas break.

From the Guardian Angels Central Catholic (GACC) gymnasium, the Blue Devils visited the Bluejays.

The GACC girls defeated Wayne, 48-18 while the Blue Devil boys topped Guardian Angels Central Catholic, 48-25.

The Wayne girls fell to 3-4 while Guardian Angels Central Catholic improved 9-0 as the Wayne boys are now 7-0 as GACC dropped to 1-6.

During the girls game, GACC held a slight lead of 8-5 after the first quarter before extending their lead thanks to an 18-5 second. At the break, the Bluejays led 26-10. GACC outscored Wayne High, 18-2 in the third as WHS won the fourth, 6-4. Final favored GACC, 48-18.

Wayne High was led by Rubie Klausen with 11 points. Faith Powicki contributed three points as Brooklyn Kruse and Frantzdie Barner both scored two points.

GACC leaders were Livia Hunke with 12 points, Sophia Hass added 10 points as Taylor Timmerman poured in nine points. A total of 10 Bluejays scored for GACC.

 

In the boys contest, GACC led early after a low-scoring 6-5 opening quarter. The Blue Devils then used a 20-10 second to lead 25-16 at the break. WHS again outscored GACC in a defensive quarter of 5-0 in the third and 18-9 in the fourth to win 48-25.

Wayne High was led by Carter Junck with 13 points, Brandon Bartos finished with 11 points and Daniel Judd added nine points. Other scoring came from both Sedjro Agoumba and Alex Phelps had four points, Devin Anderson added three points as Caiden Backer and Braydn McCorkindale each had two points.

GACC leaders were Nate Niewohner with five points and Kolton Kralik who added four points. The Bluejays used nine different scorers.

The Wayne High girls and boys are off until the 2021 Elkhorn Valley Bank Northeast Nebraska Shootout in Wayne on Tuesday, December 28. WHS will open with Winnebago as the boys game will be played at 11 a.m. from WSC and the girls game at 12:45 p.m. from the Jr/Sr High School. GACC is off until Tuesday, December 28 during the North Bend Holiday Tournament.
