Trojan Volleyball Looking To Build Off 20-Win Season

WAKEFIELD – With an inter-squad scrimmage and home jamboree match against a northeast Nebraska opponent slated for this week, the Wakefield volleyball program is gearing up for their 2022 campaign.

Wakefield volleyball attended the Malcolm team camp, Sioux City for an MVP camp and Wayne State College along with their summer open gyms.

Brittany Eisenmann will be entering her third year as the head coach for Trojan volleyball and fifth overall. Coach Eisenmann went over their week one practice schedule.

“So, we basically started off with just a bunch of skill work just to review everything,” said Eisenmann. “We have a smaller freshmen class and a couple of sophomores this year. So, we want to make sure that our younger girls our getting fundamentally sound before we’re rushing into any team play.”

Joining coach Eisenmann is Jessi Gallegos, Jessica Borg and Heidi Brown with roughly 19 out for the Trojan volleyball team.

Wakefield will be welcoming in the community during their Gatorade scrimmage on Tuesday, August 16 at 6:30 p.m. for three sets before a home Jamboree match later this week.

“So, we’re going to just inter-mingle our squads,” Eisenmann added. “We will not be doing a JV vs. a Varsity because we have some injuries on our team already. So, it’ll just kind of be a mixture of all levels of volleyball. Jamboree on Thursday in Wakefield and we’re playing Winside. So, our JV will start at 5:30 p.m. and varsity will follow.”

The Trojans are coming off a 20-11 season where the team strung together seven straight wins in September and went 7-1 before ending their season in the second round of the subdistricts falling at Crofton.

Wakefield will return a handful of seniors along with four starters from last year’s team.

Coach Eisenmann mentioned the coaching staff will be looking for leadership from the upperclassmen.

“Just going out on the court and not being afraid of making errors,” Eisenmann mentioned. “Obviously, that’s going to happen. But it’s how we overcome those and how we work as a team to get through our lows. That’s kind of what we’re hoping that our older seniors and juniors will help instill in our younger girls.”

Complete schedule.

The regular season will get underway with two more home matches over the next two weeks. Wakefield will host Plainview on Thursday, August 25 at 8 p.m. and welcome in Battle Creek on Tuesday, August 30 at 7:30 p.m. during varsity action.
