HASTINGS – After a hot start early in the Class C State Softball Tournament, the Dirt Devil 14s ended their season with back-to-back Sunday losses.
In Hastings, the Dirt Devils began state tourney action with wins of 7-1 over Wakefield and 10-4 over Dmilaco Red on Friday before getting by the Creighton Thunder, 3-2 during their lone game on Saturday. Sunday’s state tourney games favored the opponents of Nebraska Polk County Slammers, 12-3 and Bennington scored late to eliminate the Dirt Devil 14s, 8-7.
The Dirt Devil 14s ended their season at 25-10.
During the lone Saturday game, Creighton took the early lead with two runs in the first inning. After three scoreless innings, the Dirt Devils posted a three-run fifth to win 3-2.
Sammi Gubbels doubled and drove in two runs while Lily Gubbels singled and scored. Kierah Haase and Taytem Ellis also scored.
Sammi Gubbels (72 pitches) secured the complete win in five innings allowing two runs off three hits while walking four batters.

During Sunday’s first game, the Dirt Devils led 1-0 after the first but the Polk County Slammers recorded a 10-run third. Both teams also scored two runs in the fourth which favored the Slammers, 12-3.
Taytem Ellis singled twice and scored while Delaney Kruse singled, drove in a run and scored. Caitlyn Mostek singled, Rylin Hall and Jersi Jensen both accounted for a RBI as Sammi Gubbels scored.
Hall (54 pitches) suffered the loss in three innings allowing three runs (two earned) off two hits while striking out and walking two batters each. Sammi Gubbels (38 pitches) worked an inning allowing nine runs (seven earned) off five hits while striking out and walking wo batters each.

Moving into the afternoon outing with Bennington, Bennington took the early lead with two runs in the first and one run in the second. The Dirt Devil 14s answered with a five-run third and two more runs in the fourth to lead 7-3. Bennington then tied the game with a four-run fifth and scored the go-ahead run in the top of the sixth to win, 8-7.
Ellis singled twice, doubled, drove in three runs and scored twice as Haase doubled, drove in a run and scored. Delaney Kruse singled twice, drove in two runs and scored; Jensen singled and drove in a run; Carli Canham singled and scored; Mostek singled as Lily Gubbels scored twice.
Sammi Gubbels (104 pitches) suffered the complete game loss in six innings allowing eight runs (five earned) off 10 hits while striking out two batters and walking four.

The McCook Rebels defeated the Polk County Slammers twice of 4-1 and 12-0 to win the Class C 14U State Softball Tournament on Sunday.
