Top Mid State Conference Seeds Fall At Northeast Community College

NORFOLK – Tuesday evening marked a rematch between a pair of northeast Nebraska boys basketball teams during first round action of the Mid State Conference Tournament.

From Northeast Community College, #4 Wayne took on #5 Norfolk Catholic following the 1/8 match which saw Pierce upset #1 Cedar Catholic, 61-43.

In the first meeting, WHS came back to win 59-51 in Wayne on January 3.

During the second meeting, Norfolk Catholic again jumped ahead early with an 11-5 first and 18-7 second quarter. At the break, the Knights led 29-12. WHS started to mount a comeback with a 13-8 third and 18-16 fourth but fell short 53-43. Both teams are now 8-9 on the season.

Wayne High was led in scoring from Shea Sweetland with 12 points as Tyrus Eischeid followed with nine points and five rebounds. Cody Rogers tallied eight points, six from Marcus Fertig and four points by Tyler Gilliland. Other scoring came from Kallan Herman with three and a point from Josh Lutt.

Ethan Piper dropped 17 points and 11 boards to lead Norfolk Catholic as Nate Brungardt followed with 16 points.

From Norfolk Catholic high school, #3 Boone Central/Newman Grove defeated #6 O’Neill 61-55 as #2 Battle Creek downed #7 Crofton 60-47.

The Wayne High boys will next face (#1 Hartington Cedar Catholic) at 6:15 p.m. on Friday, February 1 at Norfolk Catholic high school in the loser’s bracket game. The winner advances to the fifth place game while the loser will be eliminated.
