Three Wildcat Basketball Standouts Earn All-Conference Honors

WAYNE – The day following first round defeats for both the Wayne State College women’s and men’s basketball teams saw a few individuals being recognized by the conference.

Wayne State men’s sophomore Jordan Janssen as well as juniors Erin Norling and Halley Busse from the women’s team were tabbed with All-Conference honors.

According to a release from the Wayne State Athletics office, Norling is a repeat First Team selection while both Janssen and Busse took home Second Team All-NSIC.

Norling, a 5’11 forward from Loretto, Minnesota (Delano HS) led Wayne State in scoring and rebounding this season with 19.9 points and 8.0 rebounds per contest. She ranked second in the NSIC in scoring, tied for fourth in rebounding, tied for fourth in minutes played (33.6) and was eighth in blocked shots per game (1.0). Norling scored double figures in all 29 games this season and has scored double digits in 47 straight and 56 of her last 57 games dating back to last season.

She was named NSIC South Division Player of the Week on November 25th after scoring a career high 32 points at South Dakota School of Mines and had 28 points two days later at Black Hills State. Norling accounted for 15 games of 20 or more points this season and her 576 points ranked sixth most by a Wildcat player in a single season. She currently ranks 12th in all-time scoring at Wayne State with 1,336 points.

This marks the third season that Norling has received post-season honors, earing First Team All-NSIC honors the last two seasons while being named to the All-NSIC Freshman Team three years ago.

Busse a 5’5 guard from Winthrop, Minnesota (Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop HS), was Second Team All-NSIC after averaging 14.0 points this season. She ranked 10th in the NSIC in scoring, fourth in free throw percentage (.855), fifth in assists per game (3.9) and 10th in assist/turnover ratio (1.5).

Busse had 23 games of double figure scoring, highlighted by a season high of 25 points vs. Northern State (1/18/20). She had a career high of nine assists vs. Minot State (2/1/20) and vs. Concordia-St. Paul (2/14/20). Busse lead the Wildcats in 3-point-fiield goals (56) and currently ranks seventh in all-time assists at Wayne State with 292.

The Wayne State College women finished the 2019-20 season with a record of 16-13 overall and seventh place in the NSIC South Division with an 11-11 league record.

 

 

Janssen, a 6-7 center from Lincoln East HS, averaged a double-double for the Wildcats this season with 16.9 points and 10.1 rebounds per game. He ranked in the top 10 in 7 major statistical categories that included second in rebounds per game, sixth in blocked shots (1.3), ninth in field goal percentage (.508), ninth in assists per game (3.8), ninth in assist/ turnover ratio (1.5), tied for ninth in steals per game (1.2) and 10th in scoring.

He recorded 17 double-doubles on the season and was named NSIC South Division Player of the Week twice during the season (11/25/19 and 12/9/19), becoming the first Wildcat player since Amry Shelby in the 2012-13 season to earn NSIC Player of the Week honors. Janssen scored double figures in 31 of 32 games this season with eight games of 20 or more points and recorded 18 games of 10 or more rebounds.

Janssen scored a season high of 28 points to go with 14 rebounds vs Winona State (12/7/19) and had a career high of 21 rebounds with 17 points against Upper Iowa on 12/6/19. Dating back to last season, Janssen has scored double figures in 40 of his last 41 games and his 322 rebounds this season were the sixth-most in Wildcat history.

The Wayne State College men ended the 2019-20 season with records of 10-22 overall and sixth place in the NSIC South Division with a 7-15 league mark.
