Three Wayne Holiday Tourney Games Carried on Radio

WAYNE – A pair of consolation games and one of the championship contests during the 2019 Great Northeast Nebraska Shootout will be carried on the radio and waynedailynews.com Tuesday.

Four games will be played at Wayne High and four from Rice Auditorium on the campus of Wayne State College.

The lone game covered on The City ‘KCTY’ 98.9/1590 will first start around 10:45 a.m. as Wayne High (4-5) takes on Laurel-Concord-Coleridge (7-1) for the fifth consecutive year in the holiday tournament, eighth time in past nine years.

Wayne High began the tournament with a 74-10 win over Pender before losing to Hartington Cedar Catholic 58-44 Saturday while the Bears first edged Arlington (69-62) and suffered a 63-50 setback to Auburn.

Later in the afternoon the boys championship game will be carried on Big Red Country ‘KTCH’ 104.9 featuring Auburn (6-0) and Hartington Cedar Catholic (5-0) at 2 p.m.

After not making it to the finals of the Wayne Holiday Tournament last year, the Trojans made four consecutive trips to the championship games (champion in 2016 and 2017). For Auburn, they’re coming off winning the Nebraska Wesleyan Holiday Tournament last year.

Cedar Catholic opened tourney play with a 62-40 win against Hastings St. Cecilia and 58-44 victory over Wayne while the Bulldogs took care of business against West Point-Beemer (73-27) and handed LCC their first loss of 63-50.

The final game aired on Big Red Country ‘KTCH’ 104.9 will be the girls consolation game at 3:30 p.m. in a rematch from last year’s Blue Division third place contest. Arlington (6-3) will take on Pender (5-4).

A year ago, Pender topped Arlington 71-68.

The Pendragons began the tourney with a 64-59 win against Wayne before falling to undefeated St. Cecilia (47-35). Arlington came back against LCC (39-38) while suffering a 40-26 loss to West Point-Beemer.
