Three Blue Devil Cross Country Runners Qualify For State Meet In Kearney

ALBION – A week after the Wayne High cross country program finalized their postseason line-up, the Blue Devil runners were back in action Thursday during district competition.

Boone Central hosted the Class C-3 District Cross Country race from the Albion Country Club.

The Wayne High girls placed fourth with 66 points while the Blue Devil boys finished sixth with 109 points.

The Blue Devil girls were led by state qualifiers sophomore Laura Hasemann in seventh place (21:28) while freshman Frantzdie Barner placed 11th in a time of 21:51.

Other Wayne High girls results came from senior Andi Belt (22nd – 23:40); freshman Raegan Maas (26th – 24:27); sophomore Erin Avery (34th – 25:24) and junior Maria Vergara (46th – 29:36).

Junior Alexus Sindelar of Pierce won the 5K race in a time of 19:19 among a field of 53 runners.

Boone Central won the team race with 27 points; Pierce came in runner-up with 35 points and Columbus Scotus finished third to qualify for state with 44 points.

District Results C-3 10-15-20

The Wayne High boys top finisher was state qualifier freshman Jesus Zavala in sixth (17:28).

Other Blue Devil boys results saw freshman Alex Frank (33rd – 19:37); senior Christopher Woerdemann (34th – 19:41); sophomore Calvin Starzl (36th – 19:54); sophomore Ethan McCraney (41st – 20:21) and senior Treyton Blecke (43rd – 20:29).

Hartington-Newcastle sophomore Carson Noecker finished 20 seconds ahead of senior Mason Sindelar of Pierce in a time of 15:32 to win the boys race among 71 competitors.

Pierce won the team race with 34 points; Columbus Scotus followed in second with 48 points as O’Neill placed third with 66 points to all qualify for state.

The 2020 NSAA State Cross Country Championships will be held at the Kearney Country Club on Friday, October 23. Class C girls will run at 1:30 p.m. followed by the Class C boys at 2 p.m.
