Third Quarter Favors Wildcat Women In Weekend Split

QUINCY, IL – Following a Friday night loss in the Subway Tip-Off Classic, the Wayne State College women’s basketball team was looking for a bounce back win over the host.

Saturday afternoon, WSC took on Quincy University in Quincy, Illinois.

Quincy jumped out front by a point, 17-16 before WSC took a 29-28 lead into the locker room. After giving up points in the third the night before, the ‘Cats came out strong into the second half with a 25-17 quarter before Quincy started to mount a comeback which saw Wayne State hold on to win 69-62. WSC is now 3-1 on the season while Quincy fell to 0-4.

Five Wildcats posted double figure scoring with Halley Busse going for 17 points on 6-10 shooting, including a pair of three-pointers and 3-4 from the foul line. Maggie Lowe followed with 15 points on 6-13 shooting, two triples and a foul shot. Erin Norling was two boards away from a double-double with 13 points and eight rebounds while adding five assists and two blocks, Haley Vesey tallied 12 points as Andrea Larson tacked on 10 points and five rebounds. Busse and Norling both recorded three steals.

Busse was also named to the All-Tournament Team for the weekend.

WSC shot 23-61 (37.7%) from the field, 8-21 (38.1%) from behind the arc and 15-21 (71.4%) from the foul line.

Maddie Spagnola and Aleksandra Petrovic both paced Quincy in scoring with 14 points as Jessica Merino added 11 points. Quincy out-rebounded the ‘Cats 42-32.

Quincy finished 22-64 (34.4%) from the floor, 9-29 (31%) from the three-point line and 9-15 (60%) from the charity stripe.

In the early game Saturday, Truman State University edged Winona State University 59-56 in overtime.

Wayne State College will next host Peru State at 4 p.m. on Saturday, November 24 with the men to entertain Mount Marty that same day at 6 p.m. from Rice Auditorium.
