FAYETTE, IA – With four consecutive road games over an eight-day period, the Wayne State College women finished off with a weekend sweep.
The Wildcat women’s basketball team were back at Dorman Gymnasium Saturday late afternoon to close out their second straight two-game road weekend.
After building a five-point halftime lead, WSC outscored Upper Iowa by 10 points in the final 10 minutes of play to win 78-70. The ‘Cats improved to 4-4 (3-3 NSIC) as the Peacocks fell to 1-7 (0-6 NSIC).
WSC also won Friday evening 84-79 after splitting road games last weekend on Saturday and Sunday at Minnesota State-Mankato.
Wayne State jumped ahead with a 19-17 first quarter and 20-17 second to lead 39-34 at the break. Upper Iowa cut into the deficit with a 20-13 third quarter and took a slight lead before the Wildcats dominated the fourth, 26-16. Final again favored Wayne State, 78-70 who won back-to-back on the road this past weekend.
WSC was led by a double-double from senior Erin Norling with 19 points and 12 rebounds (7-19 FG/2-5 3PT/3-5 FT) while junior Kylie Hammer poured in a bench-high 17 points to go along with four assists and three blocks (5-10 FG/2-3 3PT/5-8 FT). Senior Halley Busse added 13 points (3-9 FG/3-6 3PT/4-4 FT) as junior Autumn Mlinar finished with 12 points, three assists and nine rebounds (4-5 FG/3-4 3PT/1-2 FT).
Other scoring came from sophomore Josey Ryan and Kassidy Pingel with five points each, sophomore Ashley Gustavson poured in four points and senior Brittany Bongartz had three points and eight rebounds. Norling also recorded three steals.
Wayne State shot 24-62 (38.7%) from the field, 11-24 (45.8%) from behind the arc and 19-28 (67.9%) from the foul line.
Peacock leaders were Lydia Haack with 29 points and Katie Tornstrom with 10 points.
Upper Iowa finished 26-67 (38.8%) from the floor, 7-23 (30.4%) from the three-point line and 11-13 (84.6%) at the charity stripe.
