KEARNEY – With district wrestling action leading up to the individual state wrestling championships in Omaha, 32 teams were represented over the weekend during the 2020 State Duals.
From the Buffalo County Fairgrounds, all four classes featured eight teams in Kearney.
In Class D: #1 Plainview defeated #3 Burwell (54-21) in the finals. The Pirates have won back-to-back state dual titles.
Area results: Plainview defeated #8 Winside (76-4) as #4 Mullen won against #5 Pender (49-27) in the opening round; Plainview defeated #4 Mullen (50-14) in the quarterfinals; Winside defeated Pender (40-24) in the consolation semifinal and Winside lost to #7 Maxwell (54-30) in the fifth-place match.
Class C: #1 David City Aquinas defeated #2 Valentine (39-31). Aquinas finished runner-up last year.
#2 Valentine defeated #7 Battle Creek (52-27) in the opening round as #3 Conestoga defeated Battle Creek (45-33) in the consolation semifinal.
Class B: #1 Hastings defeated #3 Pierce (54-24) in the championship match.
Area results: Pierce edged #6 Blair (36-35) in the opening round as Pierce defeated #7 Gering (42-33) in the quarterfinals.
Class A: #1 Millard South defeated #3 Lincoln East (49-18) in the championship dual. This marks their fifth state dual title in six years.
Area results: #4 Norfolk High defeated #5 Omaha Burke (45-30) in the opening round; #1 Millard South defeated Norfolk (60-10) in the quarterfinals and #2 Grand Island defeated Norfolk (45-29) in the third-place match.
