Starting Core Returns For Winside Volleyball, Season Begins August 29

WINSIDE – Although the win total has decreased a bit, the Winside Wildcat volleyball team has been a .500 + win team over the past three seasons and will look to take another stride in 2019.

Coaching for over a decade at Winside, Teresa Watters said the team took part in the Concordia camp over the summer where they put in some new systems.

“Spend a couple days there (and) it really kind of fired us up; charged us up,” said coach Watters. “Changed our offense, changed our defense just a little bit. So, I’d really like to see that consistency of those systems put in place when we start the season.”

Assisting coach Watters will be Brittany Caldwell and Rachelle Rogers-Spann. The team will have 14 girls on the roster this season as the group did lose their libero but will return several letter winners and starters.

Winside ended last year with a loss to Wynot in the D2-4 Subdistrict closing out their 2018 season at 15-13. The Wildcats did win four of six towards the end of the season after dropping five of six at the beginning of the year.

The Winside volleyball team was also invited down to the state fair this year on Saturday, August 24.

“So, actually our jamboree is Saturday at Heartland Lutheran in Grand Island and we play Anselmo-Merna and Mullen,” coach Watters added. “So, that’s a great opportunity for our kids to see different competition and play in a different venue.”

Winside will begin their season at Plainview on Thursday, August 29. During the Winside Quad that weekend of Saturday, August 31, teams of Hartington/Newcastle, Howells-Dodge and Randolph will be in action. On the schedule this year, will be four home triangular contests for Winside of their six.
