WAYNE – The Wayne State College women’s and men’s outdoor track & field team will see individuals continue their 2018 season in late May.
In a press release from the Wayne State Athletics office, four female athletes have qualified in six events while two male athletes in their respective events will represent WSC during the 2018 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Nationals will take place on Thursday, May 24 – Saturday, May 26 in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Female competitors will be senior Michaela Dendinger in three events – hammer throw, shot put and discus with senior Kacie O’Connor qualifying in the discus, sophomore Tia Jones in the shot put and freshman Jadin Wagner in the shot put. On the men’s side, athletes will be senior Derek Lahm in the decathlon and sophomore Cade Kalkowski in the hammer throw.
Dendinger, a graduate of Hartington Public HS (Coleridge), will compete in the hammer throw on Thursday, May 24th at 2 p.m. She enters nationals ranked second nationally with a mark of 205’10” at the Fort Hays State Classic March 30th. Dendinger will then compete in the shot put (10:15 a.m.) and discus (3 p.m.) on Saturday, May 26th. She is ranked first in NCAA Division II in the shot put with a throw of 54’3 ¾” at the NSIC Championships May 11th and is sixth in the discus with a mark of 175’0” at the UNK Invite April 11th.
O’Connor, from Sundance, Wyoming (Sundance HS) is a national qualifier in the discus for the second time in three years. She recorded a season best mark of 163’6” at the Minnesota State Twilight meet May 4th and is ranked 12th entering the national meet and will compete on Saturday, May 26th at 3 p.m.
Jones, from Elkhorn (Elkhorn HS) is a national qualifier in the shot put and will compete on Saturday, May 26th at 10:15 a.m. She is ranked 22nd in NCAA Division II with a top mark of 47’3 ½” set at the Mount Marty Twilight Meet April 25th.
Wagner, from Lawton, Iowa (Lawton-Bronson HS) is a national qualifier in the shot put and ranked 16th nationally after throwing 47’9” at the NSIC Championships May 11th. She will compete on Saturday, May 26th at 10:15 a.m.
Lahm, from Columbus (Scotus Catholic HS), will compete in the Decathlon on Thursday and Friday, May 24th and 25th. He is ranked 13th in NCAA Division II with 6,951 points after winning the NSIC Decathlon April 29th setting a new WSC school record.
Kalkowski, from Niobrara (Niobrara HS), is ranked 20th in the nation in the hammer throw with a top mark of 194’6” at the UNK Last Chance Meet May 13th. He won the NSIC hammer throw one day earlier with a mark of 190’10”. He will compete on Thursday, May 24th at 11 a.m.
