Seven Members Of Wayne State Rugby Recognized With All-American Honors

WAYNE – As the Wayne State College women’s and men’s rugby program prepares for 7s competition, seven Wildcats were listed as All-American.

According to a release, National Collegiate Rugby (NCR) announced the 2021 Small College All-American recipients.

NCR’s All American program recognizes student-athletes who have earned this distinct honor for being top performers in the Fall of 2021. Recognition as an NCR All American is a special honor that is reserved for the “best of the best.”

Junior Selma Taylor, senior Isabelle Robinson, junior Ashton Hurley, junior Taylor Ference and senior Lauren Nelson led the way for the Wildcat women while freshmen Sean Munemo and Killian Burns were tabbed All-American for the Wayne State men.

The Women’s Small College All American list includes players from 13 universities across the nation. National Champions Wayne State College leads the pack with five selections including repeat All American senior Izzy Robinson, who was also named the National Championship Most Valuable Player, and to the All Star 7s All-Tournament Team. Trixie Jo Schlechter, the other repeat name, is a prolific try scorer for the University of South Dakota who led her team in tries this fall. With mostly upperclassmen recognized, the Small College All Americans will likely be dynamic in the coming years.

The Wayne State College rugby teams will open their 7s season on Saturday, March 19 during the St. Louis Tournament.
