Schutte Eclipses 2,000 Career Points, LCC Punches Ticket To State

ALBION – A year after the Laurel-Concord-Coleridge boys basketball team was denied a trip to state in a Class C2 district final, the Bears were back in the same spot Tuesday evening.

From Boone Central/Newman Grove High School in Albion, #3 LCC took on #14 Anselmo-Merna in the D1-3 District Final.

Following a dominant start to the game, Laurel-Concord-Coleridge took a double figure lead into the half and never looked back winning 63-37. LCC won their fifth straight improving to 23-5 and qualifying for their first state tournament as Laurel-Concord-Coleridge. The Coyotes ended their season at 15-8.

The Bears jumped ahead 23-14 in the first quarter before holding Anselmo-Merna to just six points (all from the foul line) in the second and scoring 16 points themselves. LCC led 39-20 at the break. Laurel-Concord-Coleridge then outscored the Coyotes 14-8 in the third and 10-9 in the fourth to again win 63-37 and be crowned district champs.

Noah Schutte surpassed the 2,000-point mark in his career early in the third quarter Tuesday night to finish with 37 points (12-15 FT) followed by Ty Erwin with nine points. Other LCC scoring came from Evan Haisch with seven points, Cael Hartung added six points as Deagan Puppe and Austin Hall both finished with two points.

LCC shot 20-26 from the foul line.

Seth Miller poured in 17 points (5-7 FT) to lead Anselmo-Merna in scoring. The Coyotes finished 11-14 from the charity stripe.

The 2020 NSAA boys state basketball tournament is scheduled for Thursday, March 12 – Saturday, March 14. Class D1 teams will play their first round at Lincoln East High School.
