YUTAN – A six-team district baseball tournament began Friday morning as the Wayne High baseball team ended their season in heart-break.
From Itan Park in Yutan, #1 Platte Valley (Ashland-Greenwood/Yutan/Mead) hosted day one of the B-6 District Tournament. Thursday games were postponed to Friday.
#6 GACC/Scribner-Snyder/West Point-Beemer picked up a 4-1 victory over #3 Wayne High on Friday and will next face #2 Beatrice (15-4) on Friday, May 6 at 4 p.m. in Yutan.
Earlier this season, the Blue Devils won 1-0 in Wayne on April 4 (Brooks Kneifl perfect game) and 11-1 in West Point on April 26.
The Patriots are now 5-8 on the season while Wayne High ended the year at 13-7.
GACC/Scribner-Snyder/West Point-Beemer opened scoring with a run in the top of the first inning. Following a scoreless second, the Patriots added two more runs in the third to lead 3-0. After two more scoreless innings, the Blue Devils put a run across the plate in the home half of the sixth. GACC/Scribner-Snyder/West Point-Beemer answered with one more run in the seventh to hold onto the 4-1 victory. Both teams finished with five hits as WHS committed two errors.
Gavin Redden tripled and scored, Devin Anderson singled and drove in a run as Jacob Anderson doubled for Wayne. Brooks Kneifl and Brandon Bartos both singled.
Wyatt Heikes suffered the loss in three innings allowing three runs off two hits while striking out six batters, walking three batters and hitting one. Gavin Redden worked the final four innings allowing one run off three hits while striking out seven batters and walking one batter.
The Patriots were led by Branden Duhsmann with a double and two RBI while Bryce Bailey doubled and drove in a run. Keaton Persson singled and scored as Keegan Doggett and Michael Cohee both singled.
Reese Schlecht picked up the win in six and two-thirds allowing one run off four hits while striking out 14 batters and walking three. Coy Kreikemeier earned the save getting the final out after allowing a hit.
The second game of the day is #4 Ralston (10-9) vs. #5 Seward (5-16) which started at 1 p.m. with the winner to face #1 Platte Valley at 7 p.m. on Friday.
The two semifinal winners (4/7 p.m.) will play at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday in the B-6 District Final.
