KINGSVILLE, TX – Day one of the 2019 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships featured all four Wayne State College Wildcats in action.

From Kingsville, Texas, redshirt freshman Mckenzie Scheil was the lone Wildcat female competitor and took home All-American honors. She placed seventh in the hammer throw Thursday with a throw of 182’ 10”. This continues the tradition of Wildcat All-American throwers, marking the sixth time in the last seven years that a Wayne State women’s thrower has collected All-American honors.

Scheil, a graduate of Fillmore Central HS (Fairmont), recorded a top mark in prelims of 177’ 9” to earn the ninth and final qualifying spot entering finals. On her first attempt in finals, Scheil posted a season-best mark of 182’ 10” to move into a three-way tie for fifth place with two other throwers. Scheil ended in seventh place due to tiebreaker rules that saw the other two throwers record better marks on their next best throws.

Racheal Somoye of Kingsville posted the top mark of 188’ 10” on her first throw.

Scheil entered nationals with the 17th best mark in the country and finished as an All-American in the hammer throw.

Two Wildcat men were also in action during the hammer throw event. Junior Dylan Kaup placed 14th out of 24 competitors overall with a top mark of 190’ 4” as sophomore Cade Kalkowski placed 21st at 181’ 4” on his final attempt in prelims.

Kaup, from Neligh (Neligh-Oakdale HS) also recorded a mark of 190’ 3” before a foul on his third and final attempt in prelims in his first trip to the national championships in the event.

Kalkowski, from Niobrara (Niobrara HS), fouled on his first throw followed by a mark of 179’ 9” on his second attempt. It was the second straight year that Kalkowski competed at outdoor nationals in the hammer throw.

Decio Andrade of Angelo State won the men’s hammer throw at 222’.
