MOORHEAD, MN – With Easter Sunday moving up games for the Wayne State College softball team, WSC was in action Friday late afternoon.

The first road doubleheader featured the ‘Cats visiting MSU Moorhead.

From the opening game, MSU Moorhead tallied a run in the first before outscoring WSC 6-1 in the second. The Dragons added to their 7-1 lead with a three-run third before Wayne State tallied two runs in the top of the fourth. MSU Moorhead won the game with a single run in the fifth at 11-3 in five innings.

Raquell Penke posted a pair of singles and two RBI while Kamryn Sparks singled and drive in a run. Morgan Vasa doubled while Emily Chandler and Ashley Hernandez both singled.

Makenna Adkison (7-11) suffered the loss in four innings allowing seven runs (six earned) off seven hits while striking out two batters, hitting one and walking four more. Maddie Moser worked two-thirds of an inning allowing four earned runs off five hits while striking out and walking two batters each.

During the second contest, WSC outscored MSU Moorhead 3-2 in the opening inning before the Dragons answered with a 6-2 second. Down 8-5, Wayne State posted a five-run fifth and tacked on a single run in the sixth to hold on for the 11-8 victory. With the split the Wildcats are now 11-28 (2-20 NSIC) as MSU Moorhead sits 13-26 (6-16 NSIC).

Abbie Hix recorded two singles, a double and three RBI while Taylor Menard added three singles and three RBI. Emily Chandler posted two solo homeruns to go along with a third RBI as Hernandez doubled twice and drove in three runs. Kamryn Sparks tallied a three-run homer and a single while Kim Vidlak, Vasa and Penke all singled. With a pair of homers, Chandler now moves into second all-time with 29 career homeruns surpassing Sam O’Brien (28 from 2013-16).

Riley Vanderveen (2-6) picked up the complete game win in seven innings allowing eight runs (two earned) off 11 hits while striking out three batters and walking one.

The Wayne State College softball team will next visit Northern State Saturday at noon and 2 p.m.
