LINCOLN – One team who’ll be making their second straight trip to state and another who has been absent from state competition for nearly two decades will be matching up in the opening round of the 2019 NSAA State Volleyball Championships.
From Lincoln North Star high school, the top eight teams in Class C1 will be in action on Thursday, November 6 with four winners advancing two a double elimination format and the other half going home.
Wayne High moved up a spot to #4 in the power-point standings following their four-set victory over Chase County in the C1-5 District Final to now sit 29-5 on the season. Their opponent, who they traded places with, will be #5 Broken Bow. The Indians are now 32-2 and have won 24 consecutive matches after picking up a four-set win over Kearney Catholic in their district final.
Last year, WHS saw their season come to an end at the hands of Wahoo in straight sets but will be making their 10th appearance at state come Thursday. The Blue Devils will be in search for their first state tourney win since defeating Lincoln Lutheran in 2002 (lost to Pierce in 2003 and lost to Ogallala in 2013).
For Broken Bow, 2019 marks the first time since 2000 they’ve qualified for state and fifth time in program history.
Sports Director, Aaron Scheffler will have the call on The City ‘KCTY’ 98.9/1590 and online at waynedailynews.com with pregame coverage set for 3:15 p.m. The match is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m. or following the opening contest between #1 St. Paull (33-0) vs. #8 Battle Creek (28-5) at 1:30 p.m.
The other half of the bracket will feature two-time defending champions (back-to-back) #2 Wahoo (28-3) vs. #7 Norfolk Catholic (23-6) at 5:30 p.m. and #3 Lincoln Lutheran (34-3) vs. #6 Chadron (31-7) at 7:30 p.m.
The winners will advance to a semifinal round on the south court of the Pinnacle Bank Arena Friday at 1/3 p.m. The consolation match will be played at 9 a.m. from Lincoln East Saturday with the Class C1 championship game being held at the Bob Devaney Sports Center at 3 p.m.
Other northeast Nebraska teams in action Thursday will be Class C2 teams from Lincoln Southwest HS of #4 Lutheran High Northeast (29-6) vs. #5 Bishop Neumann (25-9) at 3:30 p.m. and #7 Wisner-Pilger (22-11) vs. #2 Superior (29-2) at 7:30 p.m. The Eagles will be making their eighth state tourney appearance (first since 2016) and the Gators are back at state for the 16th time (first since 2010).
In Class D1 from Lincoln Southeast HS: #6 Hartington Cedar Catholic (18-12) will close out the night against #3 Chambers/Wheeler Central (30-2) at 7:30 p.m. The Trojans will be making their fourth straight state tourney appearance as the past two years HCC has placed runner-up in C2 (Blue Hill won in 2018/Superior won in 2017).
In Class D2 from Lincoln Northeast HS: #2 Wynot (24-3) will face #7 Falls City Sacred Heart (21-13) at 5:30 p.m. Wynot is back at state for the second consecutive year, eighth overall and fifth time since 2011 after placing fourth last year in Class D2.
