SPRINGFIELD – Following their first loss of the summer, the Wayne Post 43 Senior American Legion baseball teams bounced back with three consecutive wins to close out the Springfield Tournament with a 3-1 record.
Post 43 dropped a 9-1 game to Waverly in five innings Friday evening but then finished strong with a 5-3 win in eight innings over Mt. Michael Saturday morning and closed out the tourney with wins over both Springfield (8-0/five innings) and Ashland (5-3) Sunday. The Wayne Post 43 Seniors are now 15-1 on the season.
In the Saturday win over Mount Michael, Tyrus Eischeid recorded a two-run homerun in the top of the eighth to seal the victory for Wayne. Hagan Miller tripled, Josh Lutt added two singles while Jacob Kneifl, Blake Bartos, Gunnar Jorgensen and Max Miller all singled.
Lutt picked up the complete game victory in eight innings allowing three runs off six hits while striking out seven batters.
From the Sunday morning win over the host Springfield, Kneifl recorded a single, double and three runs scored while Brock Hopkins doubled for Wayne. Jorgensen singled twice; Miller and Lutt both singled and scored twice; Bartos singled and scored as Korth and DeBoer both singled.
Kneifl picked up the complete game shutout victory in five innings allowing two hits while striking out six batters.
During the win against Ashland, Eischeid posted a pair of doubles and scored for Wayne. Bartos also doubled while Kneifl and Lutt both singled; Korth singled and scored; Miller, Jorgensen and Hopkins all scored.
Eischeid picked up the win in six innings allowing five hits while striking six batters. Korth earned the save in the final inning allowing two hits while striking out three batters and walking one.
The Wayne Post 43 Juniors (4-6) will return to action on Tuesday, July 21 visiting Yankton at 2 p.m.
The Wayne Post 43 Seniors will next join their Juniors on Wednesday, July 22 when the legion teams visit Ponca at 5:30/8 p.m. before closing out their home schedule on Thursday, July 23 hosting Crofton. The teams will also visit O’Neill and Wakefield next Monday and Tuesday, July 27 – 28. The Seniors will then end their season during the Bennington Tournament competing against Alliance, Concordia and Blair on Thursday and Friday, July 30 – 31.
