WAYNE – Postseason baseball began for several northeast Nebraska Senior American Legion baseball teams in Area action.
Class B and C Senior Area Tournaments are lasting from Friday, July 23 – Tuesday, July 27 with a possible rain day on Wednesday, July 28.
From Hank Overin Field in Wayne, Post 43 is the host for the Class B Area 5 Tournament.
#2 Wayne closed out Friday night with a 5-4 victory against #3 Pierce in eight innings. Post 43 improved to 14-4 on the season.
Wayne took an early 1-0 lead in the first before going up 4-0 after three innings. Pierce then started to comeback with a two-run fourth and single runs in the fifth and sixth to tie the game at four all. After a scoreless seventh, Post 43 used a walk-off single from Jacob Kneifl scoring Jacob Anderson in the home half of the eighth to win 5-4.
James Dorcey doubled twice and drove in two runs while Reid Korth, Anderson and Kneifl all singled, drove in a run and scored. Blake Bartos singled twice and scored; Justin Sherman singled as Toby Braun scored.
Korth earned the win (74 pitches) in three innings allowing one run off one hit while striking out and walking five batters each. Kneifl started the opening five innings (79 pitches) allowing three runs off four hits while striking out four batters and walking one.

Earlier in the day, #4 O’Neill defeated #5 Stanton, 15-2 as O’Neill will next face #1 Columbus Lakeview at 4 p.m. on Saturday. Saturday’s first game will be an elimination contest between #3 Pierce and #5 Stanton at 1 p.m.
Wayne will earn a bye into Sunday at 4 p.m. against the Lakeview/O’Neill winner.
Class B Area 3 Tourney from West Point day one results:
#3 Waterloo-Valley defeated #6 Fort Calhoun, 10-0; #2 ETC Knights edged #7 Blair, 2-1 as Waterloo-Valley will play ETC Knights at 5 p.m. Also, #4 Arlington shutout #5 Albion, 8-0 and will next face #1 West Point at 7:30 p.m. Saturday night who earned a bye. A Saturday elimination game will feature Fort Calhoun vs. Blair at 2:30 p.m. as Albion will earn a bye into Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
From Scribner, Wakefield Post 81 competed in the second game of the Class C Area 2 Tournament. #5 Tekamah-Herman topped #2 Wakefield, 12-5.
Other first round results saw #1 Pender hold off #6 Wisner-Pilger/Dodge-Howells, 5-2 and #4 North Bend/Morse Bluff defeated the host #3 Hooper-Scribner, 6-3.
Wakefield will next play at 1 p.m. on Saturday against Wisner-Pilger/Dodge-Howells. Undefeated Pender will face one-loss Hooper-Scribner at 4 p.m. while a pair of undefeated teams will feature Tekamah-Herman vs. North Bend/Morse Bluff at 7 p.m. Saturday night.
Class C Area 1 Tourney from Crofton day one results:
#1 Creighton won a high scoring game over #6 Hartington, 21-15; #5 Crofton defeated #2 Battle Creek, 12-3 and #4 Ponca defeated #3 Neligh, 8-4. Hartington will open Saturday vs. Battle Creek at 1 p.m. during an elimination game, followed by undefeated Creighton vs. one-loss Neligh at 4 p.m. and two undefeated teams of Crofton vs. Ponca at 7 p.m.
