Pony Travel Team Places Runner-Up During Home Tourney

WAYNE – The Wayne Pony baseball team had a busy weekend of tournament games and a tri-county league contest.

During the Wayne Youth Baseball Tournament, Wayne opened with a 17-7 victory over Dakota Valley 13U while falling to the Dakota Valley 14s (14-4) after giving up nine runs in the final half inning. Wayne also defeated Stanton Sunday night from the Summer Sports Complex (16-1) to now sit 9-3 on the season.

In the semifinal win, Zach McManigal went 2-for-4 as did James Dorcey who tripled. Aiden Liston and Dom Dominguez also recorded hits in the victory.

Wyatt Heikes worked three and two-thirds allowing six runs off two hits while striking out and walking six batters each. Yair Alcantara pitched an inning and a third allowing one run while striking out three batters.

 

From the championship loss, Zach McManigal and James Dorey both singled.

Dorey worked the opening four innings allowing five runs off four hits while striking out eight batters and walking one. Liston worked a third of an inning allowing six runs while walking five batters and striking out one as Alcantara pitched another third of an inning allowing three runs while walking three batters and striking out one.

 

During the tri-co league win, Calvin Starzl went 3-for-3 with a triple as did Liston who tallied a pair of doubles. Cooper Zara went 2-for-2 while McManigal, Dorey, Kaden Hopkins and Ryan Karsky all singled.

 

The Wayne pony team is next in action on Wednesday, June 19 at the Homer Hawks at 7 p.m. Wayne will also compete in a Wisner Tournament this weekend and host the West Point Twins Sunday.
