Ponca, Wakefield Boys In Search Of First Round State Tourney Victory Thursday

LINCOLN – All six Nebraska boys basketball classes will converge towards Lincoln over a three-day period looking to leave as champions from the Pinnacle Bank Arena.

First round NSAA boys state tournament action begins Thursday, March 7 and lasts through Saturday, March 9.

Big Red Country ‘KTCH’ 104.9 and online at waynedailynews.com will follow both #5 Wakefield and #7 Ponca in the Class C2 bracket.

Both Ponca and Wakefield won their subdistrict tournaments before advancing with a substate win last week.

Ponca defeated Laurel-Concord-Coleridge in both the subdistrict (50-48) in Wayne and substate game (55-45) in South Sioux City. The Indians are playing in their third straight tournament (17th overall), looking to defend their two-time C2 title.

For Wakefield, the Trojans defeated Howells-Dodge (57-49) before moving to state with a 59-47 win over South Loup (Callaway/Arnold). Wakefield is making their 17th state tournament appearance, first since 2006.

Thursday games will be played at Lincoln Northeast HS opening with #3 Sutton (24-2) vs. #6 Yutan (21-5) at 2 p.m. followed by #2 Bridgeport (23-2) vs. #7 Ponca (22-4) at 3:45 p.m. then #1 BRLD (24-1) will take on #8 Howells-Dodge (18-9) at 7 p.m. followed by #4 Centennial (23-2) vs. #5 Wakefield (20-3) at 8:45 p.m.

Join Sports Director, Aaron Scheffler on the call with pregame coverage set for 3:30 p.m. during the Ponca game and around 8:30 p.m. for the Wakefield game.
