WAYNE – After ending their longest losing streak of the season at five Friday night, the Wayne High boys basketball game took part in a rescheduled home game.
From the Wayne Jr/Sr high school gymnasium, the Wayne vs. Ponca double header was scheduled for December 1. The girls game was cancelled and the boys took to the court Saturday.
In the boys only contest, Wayne High took the early lead of 13-8 before the Indians answered in the second with a 17-12 quarter. At the break both teams were knotted up at 25 all. Neither team made any ground in the third quarter (17-17) and Ponca pulled away in the fourth thanks to a 16-11 quarter. Final saw Ponca hold on for the 58-53 victory to improve to 18-4 as Wayne fell to 9-12.
Shea Sweetland was the Blue Devil leader with 17 points as Cody Rogers and Marcus Fertig both tallied nine points. Tyrus Eischeid poured in eight points and six rebounds, Kallan Herman tacked on six points while Trevor DeBoer (six boards) and Tyler Gilliland both tallied two points.
Carter Kingsbury went off for a 29-point and 10 rebound game to lead Ponca as Brandon Kneifl recorded 16 points.
