Ponca Holds Off Cedar Catholic Fourth Quarter Run, Advance To District Finals

WAYNE – For the second time this season the Ponca Indians and Hartington Cedar Catholic Trojans competed against each other on the court, this time it was for a trip to the District Finals.

From the Wayne Community Schools Jr/Sr High School gym, #1 Ponca took on #2 Hartington Cedar Catholic Thursday evening.

Ponca took control in the first quarter with a 14-8 score while adding another 14-12 in the second. The Indians led 28-20 heading into the locker room. Both teams scored their highest quarter score in the third favoring Ponca, 19-13 as the Trojans poured in a 20-16 fourth, but were too late. Final found Ponca winning 63-53 to improve to 26-1 as Hartington Cedar Catholic fell to 15-10.

Logan Kingsbury paced all scorers with 18 points for Ponca as Connor Day added another 10 points. Gage McGill and Evan Anderson both tallied nine points.

Myles Thoene came off the bench to lead HCC in scoring with 12 points. Riley Arens followed 11 points as Matthew Becker and Jacob Keiser each tacked on another 10 points.

Ponca will next face Creighton, the #2 seed winner of the Class C2-6 Subdistrict with a 35-34 win over #4 Neligh-Oakdale.
