LINCOLN – Game two of the Class C2 girls state basketball tournament first round went final Thursday early evening.
From Lincoln North Star, #1 Oakland-Craig defeated #8 Clarkson/Leigh, 41-36 in game one while ahead of the fourth-seeded Ponca Indians first round match-up taking on #5 Grand Island Central Catholic.
Following an even-paced first half, Ponca took control of the third quarter to win 56-38 and advance to the semifinal round earning a re-match from last year’s C2 quarterfinal. Ponca improves to 22-4 while GICC fell to 17-8.
Ponca led 6-2 after the first as both teams poured in 18 second quarter points. The Indians remained ahead 24-20 at half. Ponca pulled away in the third with a 14-3 quarter before holding an 18-15 edge in the final quarter.
Kaci Day recorded a team-high 25 points (13-19 FT) followed by Ashlyn Kingsbury with eight points. Bri Gill and Samantha Ehlers both finished with six points, Maggie McGill tallied five points, Morgan Nelson scored four points and Gracen Evans tacked on two points.
Ponca shot 18-29 from the foul line in the game.
GICC was paced by Rylie Rice with 11 points as Gracie Woods followed with six points.
The Crusaders finished 13-20 from the charity stripe.
Class C2 evening games saw #2 Crofton (24-3) defeat #7 BRLD (20-6), 72-41 while #3 Hastings St. Cecilia (24-3) defeated #6 Superior (21-4), 56-43.
#4 Ponca will face #1 Oakland-Craig at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 6 from the Bob Devaney Sports Center with #2 Crofton taking on #3 Hastings St. Cecilia at 8:45 p.m.

Last year, then #4 Oakland-Craig defeated then #5 Ponca in the opening round, 59-47.
Class D1 (Lincoln SW): #8 Hartington Cedar Catholic improves to 11-13 and eliminates #1 Weeping Water (25-2), 54-49. HCC will next face #5 Archbishop Bergan (15-9) at 9 a.m. from the Bob Devaney Sports Center. AB defeated #4 Maywood/Hayes Center, 44-30.
Class D2 (Lincoln North Star): #4 Wynot (23-4) defeated #5 Lawrence-Nelson (25-2), 48-39. The Blue Devils will next face #1 Falls City Sacred Heart (25-3) at 2 p.m. from the Bob Devaney Sports Center. FCSH eliminated #8 Loomis, 53-27.
Class C1 (Devaney): #3 North Bend Central (25-2) defeated #6 West Point-Beemer (23-6), 48-33
Class D1 (Lincoln SW): #3 Pleasanton (26-0) defeated #6 Pender (17-12), 66-56
