Pierce Scores In Bottom Of Ninth To Eliminate Post 43, Dorcey Pitches Well Through Eight Innings

ALBION – For the second straight time, Wayne Post 43 looked to fight off elimination from the Class B Area 5 Junior Legion Tournament.

Back in Albion for the fourth straight day, #5 Wayne Post 43 took on #2 Pierce which marked the third meeting against the fellow Ralph Bishop League North Division opponent.

For the second straight meeting with Pierce, Wayne Post 43 suffered a one-run loss being 1-0 in nine innings.

It took extras for the third match-up of the season (all favoring Pierce). In the bottom of the ninth, Pierce recorded a walk-off win scoring on a passed ball to advance to the B5 Area Championship game. The Wayne Juniors ended their season at 11-9.

Wayne’s lone hits came from James Dorcey, who also walked, and Devin Anderson. Jase Dean, Cooper Zara and Kaden Keller also drew walks.

Wyatt Heikes suffered the loss in 14 pitches allowing one run and walking one batter. Dorcey (110 pitches) went the distance in eight innings allowing four hits while striking out four batters.

Wayne Post 43 opened the first round on Friday with a 13-2 win over #4 Plainview before suffering an 8-2 loss to the host #1 Albion on Saturday as the team fought off elimination on Sunday with a 13-3 win over #6 St. Paul.

The other semifinal on Monday favored #1 Albion over #3 Lakeview, 12-9.

The Class B Area 5 Junior American Legion Baseball championship game is set for Tuesday, July 13 at 5 p.m. between Albion and Pierce. Albion just needs to win once while Pierce will need to win twice as Albion defeated Pierce on Sunday, 9-3.

 

The Wayne Post 43 Seniors (13-4) will host the Class B Area 5 Tournament beginning next Friday, July 23. Game details will be posted once available as teams joining Wayne include Columbus Lakeview, O’Neill, Pierce, Schuyler and Stanton. Post 43 was last in action defeating Wisner-Pilger/Dodge-Howells, 11-3 on July 7.

The Class B Junior State Tournament will be hosted by Waverly July 17 – 22 while the Senior State Tournament will be held in Crete July 31 – August 5.

 

Wakefield Post 81 Juniors: end season at 5-10.

Wakefield suffered back-to-back losses in the Class C Area 1 Junior Tournament hosted by Hartington this past weekend. #4 Post 81 lost to #3 Wisner-Pilger/Dodge-Howells, 7-2 on Friday and were eliminated by #1 Hartington, 10-2 on Sunday following a one-day rain delay.

Monday scores favored #2 Pender over #1 Hartington, 9-8 in the battle between the two undefeated teams while #3 Wisner-Pilger/Dodge-Howells eliminated #6 Crofton, 11-7. Tuesday’s lone game will feature #1 Hartington (2-1) vs. #3 Wisner-Pilger/Dodge-Howells (2-1) at 7 p.m. with the winner needing to win twice against #2 Pender (3-0) at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, July 14 to be crowned Area champion. *Pender will be hosting the Junior State Tournament, so the winner between Hartington/Wisner would qualify for state.

 

Wakefield Post 81 Seniors (6-11) will await the bracket for the Class C Area 2 Tournament hosted by Scribner. Wakefield will join the host Hooper/Scribner, North Bend-Morse Bluff, Pender, Tekamah-Herman and Wisner-Pilger/Dodge-Howells starting on Friday, July 23.

The Class C Junior State Tournament will be hosted by Pender July 17 – 22 while the Senior State Tournament will be held in Palmer July 31 – August 5.
