Pender Post 55 Holds Off Wakefield Post 81 Seniors

WAKEFIELD – With just a handful of Ralph Bishop League American Legion baseball games remaining on the schedule, the Wakefield Post 81 Seniors began a six-game schedule in six days including non-league action.

From Eaton Field, Wakefield entertained Pender Post 55 Friday evening.

Pender took the early lead with a 2-1 first inning before Wakefield tied the game 3-3 in the third inning. Pender began to take control with a four-run fourth inning to lead 7-3. Wakefield pulled back within three runs after outscoring Pender 2-1 in the sixth before Post 55 used a 3-2 seventh inning to close out the game. Final found Pender winning 11-7 to pick up their third straight win and improve to 9-3 on the season as Wakefield fell to 4-8.

Wakefield Post 81 was led by Justin Erb with a pair of singles and three RBI as Julio Sanchez produced a single, double and RBI. Ben Klein singled twice and Solomon Peitz and Esgar Godinez both tacked on a single and RBI.

Seth Nuernberger suffered the loss in four innings allowing seven runs off of 12 hits while striking out two batters and walking one. Brock Floyd worked two and two-third innings allowing four runs off of three hits while walking three batters as Lucas Oswald got the final out after allowing a hit.

Layne Heese led Pender Post 55 with a pair of doubles, a single and one RBI while Will Gatzemeyer recorded four singles and one RBI. Aaron Ras singled, doubled and drove in a run; Hunter Ferguson singled twice, doubled and drove in a run; Jordan Springer and Jacob Zuhlke both singled twice and drove as Nolan Ostrand scored four times.

Heese picked up the complete game win in seven innings allowing seven runs off of eight hits while striking out eight batters and walking two.

The Wakefield Post 81 Seniors will next compete in the Pierce Tourney this weekend. Post 81 will battle O’Neill at 4 p.m. on Saturday while Sunday games will feature vs. Pierce at Noon and against Plainview at 4 p.m.
