HASTINGS – The eldest Dirt Devil summer softball team ended their season over the fourth of July weekend with state tournament competition.
Back in Hastings for the Class B State Tourney, the Dirt Devil 16s went 1-2 ending their season at 9-9.
Wayne opened first round play Friday afternoon with a 4-3 loss to Nebraska Rage 16U before winning 13-2 Saturday morning over the McCook Rebels Gray (16U). Wayne ended the year with a 5-4 loss to the Gothenburg Angels Saturday afternoon.
In the loss to Nebraska Rage, Hope O’Reilly, Aliah Schulz, Kendall Dorey and Nikki Fertig all singled.
Dorey suffered the loss in six and a third innings allowing four runs (two earned) off four hits while striking out nine batters and walking two.
From the win over McCook, Dorey singled, tripled and drove in three runs as Schulz singled, doubled and drove in three runs for Wayne. Brianna Nissen tripled and drove in two runs; Amara Hurlbert singled and doubled; Taytum Sweetland singled and drove in a run while Kortney Aschoff and O’Reilly both singled.
Hurlbert picked up the win in six innings allowing two earned runs off nine hits while striking out and walking two batters each.
During the loss to Gothenburg, Hurlbert singled twice and drove in two runs while Aschoff singled twice and drove in a run for Wayne. Kayla Fleming and Schulz both singled twice as O’Reilly, Dorey and Sweetland all singled.
Dorey suffered the loss in six innings allowing five runs (four earned) off seven hits while striking out seven batters and walking three.
