Pair Of Extra Inning Defeats, Wayne Softball Drops Three Games Against Top Competition

LINCOLN – With all three defending softball champions from a year ago playing in the same pool, it was going to be a challenge entering the weekend for Wayne High.

A year ago, Lincoln Southwest won Class A; Elkhorn Class B (now up in A) and Wayne High Class C won in Hastings.

Throughout the day Saturday, WHS took on tough competition beginning with a 1-0 loss in eight innings against Waverly. The Blue Devils then suffered a 5-4 loss in eight innings against LSW and fell to Elkhorn 14-0. Wayne High is now 5-3 on the season and will next host a triangular against Bishop Neumann and Highway 91 on Tuesday, September 6 starting at 4:30 p.m.

In the opening game against Waverly, both teams were scoreless entering the eighth. Waverly scored the game winning run in the bottom of the eighth to earn the 1-0 victory.

Kendall Dorey and Brooklyn Kruse both singled for Wayne.

Tori Kniesche suffered the loss in seven and a third innings striking out 22 batters and walking one.

From the second contest with Lincoln Southwest, LSW outscored WHS in the opening inning 2-1. Following a pair of scoreless innings, Wayne High tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the fourth. After another three scoreless innings, Wayne took the lead with two-run top of the eighth before Lincoln Southwest walked-off the game thanks to three runs. Final favored LSW 5-4 in eight innings.

Tori Kniesche singled and doubled as Kayla Fleming doubled and drove in a run for Wayne. Dorey singled twice; Brooklyn Kruse singled and drove in a run as Brianna Nissen singled and drove in two runs.

Tori Kniesche suffered the loss in seven and two-thirds allowing four earned runs off five hits while striking out 14 batters and walking four.

During the final game of the day with Elkhorn, Elkhorn took control from the start with a 10-run first inning. Elkhorn added three runs in the second and one more in the third to win 14-0.

Kendall Dorey singled twice as Taytum Sweetland singled.

Dorey suffered the loss in three innings allowing 14 runs (six earned) off of 13 hits while striking out four batters and walking two.
