Overtime Turnover Leads To Road Victory For MSU Moorhead, Dragons Convert 5-Of-5 On Fourth Down Conversions

WAYNE – The final NSIC North Division team visited Wayne America Saturday afternoon.

From Bob Cunningham Field, Wayne State College played host to MSU Moorhead.

Wayne State College put themselves in the red zone of the Dragons six times, but failed to score half of the time compared to MSU Moorhead scoring 5 of 6 times to win in overtime, 28-22. The Dragons improve to 5-2 as the ‘Cats fall to 1-6.

Scoring began with 8:50 to play in the opening quarter from a 33-yard field goal for MSU Moorhead.

WSC accounted for the next three scores starting with a late first quarter 14-yard passing touchdown from redshirt freshman Brady Brandsfield to senior wide receiver Nate Rogers. Sophomore running back Maliki Wilson ran in from 17-yards out as junior place kicker Ethan Knudson missed the first PAT while the ‘Cats failed the two-point conversion with 11:45 to play in the second quarter. Knudson then knocked through a 41-yard field goal about halfway through the second quarter to lead 15-3.

The Dragons closed out the first half with a one-yard rushing touchdown with 1:55 remaining to pull within 15-9.

The lone third quarter points came on a 21-yard strike for the Dragons to lead 16-15 with 12:36 to play in the quarter.

Early in the fourth quarter, MSU Moorhead extended their lead with a 26-yard field goal while WSC saw freshman Alex Thramer connect with Rogers on a 16-yard score. The Dragons then tied the game up with :38 left on a 25-yard filed goal, 22 all.

In overtime, Wayne State College was picked up off before MSU Moorhead used an 18-yard score to win 28-22.

Brandsfield went 11-18 for 198 yards with a touchdown as Thramer threw for 169 yards on 14-27 with a touchdown and interception. Rogers caught two touchdown scores on eight receptions for 123 yards, sophomore tight end Connor Paxton recorded six catches for 82 yards as well as freshman Mason Lee and Wilson caught three balls for 55 yards each. Wilson also carried the ball 18 times for 87 yards and a score while Thramer rushed three times for 25 yards.

Defensively, junior linebacker Tyler Thomsen tallied 13 tackles (11 solo) and forced a fumble. Sophomore defensive back Kevin Ransom picked up eight solo tackles, junior linebacker Odessa Clark had seven tackles (six solo) while senior defensive back Emile Hope, junior defensive back Shaq Paddy and sophomore linebacker Ben Elznic all recorded six solo tackles.

MSU Moorhead ran 93 plays for 473 yards with Wayne State College gaining 475 yards on 71 total plays.

The Wayne State College football team will close out their cross divisional play on Saturday, October 20 visiting Minot State University at 1 p.m. WSC has only one home game remaining on the schedule when #1 Minnesota-State Mankato comes to town on Saturday, October 27 at 1 p.m.
