Northern State Men Knocks Down A Late Three-Point Shot To Secure Season-Opening Win At WSC

WAYNE – With only immediate family members in attendance for the home team and no visiting fans allowed in, the Wayne State College men’s basketball team welcomed in a top 10 DII opponent Saturday.

From Rice Auditorium on the campus of Wayne State College, WSC entertained #6 Northern State University.

With the game tied at 62 late, Andrew Kallman knocked down a three-point shot to seal the game for the Wolves winning 66-62. NSU improves to 1-0 while the ‘Cats begin their season at 0-1.

The first half featured six lead changes and six ties which favored WSC up 30-28 at the break. The ‘Cats took at most a 10-point lead around the 12 minute-mark of the second half before Northern State remained close. There was only one lead change late in the game along with two second half ties as Northern State went onto outscore Wayne State, 38-32 and win 66-62.

Redshirt freshman Justin Eagins paced the ‘Cats in scoring with 10 points off the bench and grabbed a team-high six rebounds while juniors Jordan Janssen (three blocks/five rebounds/two assists) and Nate Mohr each added nine points. Junior Henry Penner poured in eight points and grabbed five rebounds, freshman Jay Saunders tallied eight points and senior Ben Dentlinger finished with six points and two blocks rounding out the starting five.

Other bench leaders came from freshman Cody McCullough with five points and five rebounds, freshman Alec Millender had three points as junior Nate Thayer and freshman Zach LaFave both finished with two points.

 

Saunders, Mohr, Eagins and McCullough also had two assists each as Saunders led the team in steals with three.

WSC shot 24-58 (41.4%) from the field, 5-19 (26.3%) from behind the arc and 9-15 (60%) from the foul line.

 

Three players hit double figures for Northern State led by Parker Fox with a double-double scoring 21 points while adding 10 rebounds. Mason Stark scored 17 points and Kallman added 11 points.

NSU finished 26-54 (48.1%) from the floor, 6-21 (28.6%) from the three-point line and 8-15 (53.3%) from the charity stripe.
