PENDER/PIERCE – As Wayne punched their ticket to the Class B Junior Legion State Tourney, a pair of Class C teams did the same Tuesday evening.
In the Class C1 Area from Pierce, #3 Creighton won four games over a five-day period to be crowned champions. Creighton defeated #4 Crofton (15-1) to open the tourney on Friday, won a high-scoring contest over #2 Hartington (16-14) on Saturday, got past #6 Neligh-Oakdale (6-2) in their first meeting on Sunday and after earning a day off won against Neligh-Oakdale the second time, 11-1.
From the Class C2 Area in Pender, after #2 Hooper-Scribner eliminated #4 Tekamah-Herman, 5-4, #1 Pender advanced to state with an 11-6 win over Hooper-Scribner Tuesday.
Pender posted wins over #6 Wisner-Pilger/Dodge-Howells (7-2) on Friday, lost to #3 North Bend (4-3) on Saturday, won against #5 Ponca (9-2) on Sunday, defeated Tekamah-Herman the first time (3-0) on Monday and again on Tuesday.
The 2018 Class C Junior American Legion Baseball State Tournament is scheduled to be held in Battle Creek from Saturday, July 14 – Wednesday, July 18.
Game one will feature Imperial vs. Creighton at 10 a.m., followed by St. Paul vs. Centura (DCB) at 1 p.m., Pender will take on SOS at 4 p.m. as Wymore will face the host, Battle Creek at 7 p.m.
Area 3: #2 St. Paul won over #5 Tecumseh, 6-5
Area 4: #7 Wymore won over #1 Wilber, 8-6 before Wilber beat #3 David City, 6-5
Area 5: #1 Stromsburg-Osceola- Shelby defeated #2 Palmer-Wolbach-Greeley twice, 2-1 and 9-3
Area 6: #2 Centura defeated #3 Sutton twice, 8-2 and 9-4
Area 7: #2 Imperial won over #1 Alma, 9-6
