Northeast Nebraska Class C2 Volleyball Teams To Be Represented Well At State

LINCOLN – District Final volleyball matches were held across the state of Nebraska Saturday with a win advancing them to state and a loss ending their season.

The Class C2 District bracket was loaded with five area teams entering the day as three advancing to state.

Those who ended their season this past weekend included #16 Crofton taking #1 Superior to five sets, but falling in the final set (15-8) and #13 Wisner-Pilger was swept #8 Thayer Central (22-25, 14-25, 16-25).

Winner’s advancing found #2 Stanton sweep #15 Bridgeport (25-15, 25-11, 25-17); #5 Hartington Cedar Catholic swept #12 Burwell and #8 Battle Creek won in four sets over #9 South Loup (25-22, 23-25, 25-22, 25-16).

From Boone Central/Newman Grove HS, HCC swept Burwell with scores of the match featuring 25-21, 25-19, 25-18 to improve to 28-4 on the season.

Cedar Catholic was led by the triple-double from Maddie Wieseler with 11 kills, 21 set assists and 16 digs to go along with four solo blocks and a service ace while Jada Cattau added 16 kills and six digs. Abby Hochstein picked up nine kills and 11 digs, followed by Brianna Miller with eight kills and two aces as Aiden Wortmann tallied 14 assists and three aces. Megan Heimes was the dig leader for HCC with 18.

Other solo blocks came from Kenlee Goeden, Miller, Cattau and Hochstein.

Hartington Cedar Catholic has qualified for their third straight state tournament and 10th in program history. HCC is coming off a Class C2 runner-up finish after dropping a five-set match against Superior last year. HCC has another runner-up in 2010 (C1) while being crowned champions in 1989 (C1) and 2012 (C2).

It’s been 10 years since Battle Creek qualified for state (2008) and sixth in program history as Stanton will be taking part in their fourth straight state tournament in four years. The Mustangs finished third last year, were Class C2 champions in 2016 and placed runner-up in 2015.

#3 Blue Hill (29-2) vs. #6 Hastings St. Cecilia (22-10) at 1:30 p.m.; #2 Stanton (29-1) vs. #7 Battle Creek (22-10) at 3:30 p.m.; #1 Superior (29-2) vs. #8 Freeman (21-11) at 5:30 p.m. and #4 Thayer Central (26-6) vs. #5 Hartington Cedar Catholic (28-4) at 7:30 p.m.
