WAYNE – With the top two teams in the country both losing this past week, the Wayne State College volleyball team takes over as the #1 team in Division II.
According to a release from Wayne State Athletics, it’s the third time in program history WSC volleyball has been ranked #1 in the country (October 4 and October 25, 2010).
The 14-0 Wildcats collected 1137 points and 42 first-place votes in this week’s AVCA Division II Top 25 Coaches poll after posting three wins last week. WSC swept non-conference Peru State in Wayne followed by 3-1 NSIC road wins at Upper Iowa and Winona State.
Previous #1 Tampa (10-1) fell four spots to number five and still receiving four first-place votes while previous #2 Washburn (11-1) also dropped four spots to number six and are earning one first-place vote.
NSIC teams following #1 WSC ranked include #3 Concordia-St. Paul (10-2, up two spots); #4 St. Cloud State (12-0, up two spots); #8 Southwest Minnesota State (11-1, down one spot) and #9 Minnesota Duluth (12-0, up one spot). #23 Augustana fell out of the top 25 but are still receiving 42 votes and are listed on two or more ballots.
#1 Wayne State College will be tested immediately with a pair of top 10 ranked NSIC teams on the road this weekend. WSC will visit #4 St. Cloud State on Friday at 6 p.m. and #9 Minnesota Duluth on Saturday at 2 p.m.
