Nebraska State Football Championship Finals In The Books

WAYNE – Seven different sites hosted state championship football last Friday as high school programs finished a top of their respective classes.

A northeast Nebraska program, competed in their fourth consecutive Class C1 playoff and after falling in last year’s finals against Wahoo, this year’s second-seeded Pierce Bluejays was right back in the championships spotlight.

Pierce held a 14-7 lead at the half before putting the game away in the final two quarters by defeating #8 Adams Central, 28-19 in Pierce last Friday. The Bluejays finished the season at 12-0 which included playoff home wins over #15 West Point-Beemer, 42-21; avenged last year’s finals loss vs. #7 Wahoo (42-28) and got past #3 St. Paul (21-14). The Patriots ended their season at 10-3.

Other championship victories for Pierce include in Class C1 in 1978, 2007 and 2008 while the team placed runner-up in Class B in 1977 and 1989 while Class C1 was in 1999, 2001, 2010 and 2019. This year marked the 32nd playoff appearance in school history.

Class A: #2 Omaha Westside defeated #5 Elkhorn South, 37-21

Class B: #3 Elkhorn defeated #5 Aurora, 42-19

Class C1: #2 Pierce defeated #8 Adams Central, 28-19

Class C2: #2 Ord defeated #1 Archbishop Bergan, 28-7

Class D1: #4 Dundy County-Stratton defeated #3 Burwell, 42-36 in double overtime

Class D2: #2 Bruning Davenport/Shickley defeated #5 Sandhills/Thedford, 36-28

Six-man: #3 McCool Junction defeated #4 Sterling, 70-20
