MSU Moorhead Sweeps Wildcat Women, Men On Road

MOORHEAD, MN – The Wayne State College women’s and men’s basketball teams began a cross division road trip Friday night with MSU Moorhead.

From the Nemzek Fieldhouse in Moorhead, Minnesota, the ‘Cats competed with the Dragons.

During the women’s game, Wayne State won the opening quarter 18-15 before MSU Moorhead went off for a 21-10 second quarter. At the half, the Dragons led 36-28. MSU Moorhead then outscored WSC 16-15 in the third and 19-14 in the fourth to win 71-57. The Dragons won their 13th straight to improve to 15-2 (11-0 NSIC) as WSC fell to 11-6 (6-5 NSIC).

Erin Norling went off for 20 points on 6-14 from the field (2-3 3PT/6-7 FT). Andrea Larson added nine points, Brittany Bongartz scored eight points and grabbed a team-high nine boards. Halley Busse, Maggie Lowe and Taylor Reiner all poured in four points; Autumn Mlinar and Taylor Wangerin both tacked on three points as Haley Vesey scored two points.

WSC 21-62 (33.9%) from the field, 4-16 (25%) from the three-point line and 11-14 (78.6%) from the foul line.

Megan Hintz posted a double-double with 21 points and 12 boards as Jacky Volkert finished with 16 points. Madi Green added 13 points and nine boards.

MSU Moorhead finished 27-64 (42.2%) from the floor, 3-19 (15.8%) from behind the arc and 14-17 (82.4%) from the charity stripe.

In the men’s contest, MSU Moorhead took their largest lead of the game at six points late in the first half. WSC ended the half strong with a 38-33 lead. In the second half, Wayne State College built their largest lead to 11 points. The Dragons then hit their foul shots late to win 80-76. MSU Moorhead improved to 14-5 (8-3 NSIC) as the ‘Cats fell to 13-4 (8-3 NSIC).

Four of the five Wildcat starters tallied double figure scoring led by Kendall Jacks with 17 on 7-14 shooting (1-2 3PT/2-3 FT). Nick Ferrarini and Vance Janssen both tallied 16 points as Trevin Joseph tacked on 13 points. Jordan Janssen (10 boards/three assists) and Al’Tavius scored six points each and Tony Bonner finished with two points.

WSC shot 30-60 (50%) from the floor, 6-20 (30%) from behind the arc and 10-15 (66.7%) from the foul line.

Travaun Coad paced all scorers with 26 points on 10-14 shooting from the field (6-6 FT) and eight rebounds. Bryce Irsfeld and Addison Park both tallied 11 points.

The Dragons finished 28-60 (46.7%) from the field, 3-13 (23.1%) from the three-point line and 21-24 (87.5%) from the charity stripe.
