WEST POINT – The five softball teams that make up the Mid State Conference will be in action this weekend before entering postseason competition.
From Timmerman Field in West Point, Wayne High earned the #2 seed with their 17-3 overall record.
WHS recently finished runner-up in the Adams Central Invite falling to 21-4 Kearney Catholic, 10-2 this past weekend. The loss also snapped an eight-game winning streak.
The Blue Devils will open Saturday, October 3 against #3 O’Neill (11-11) at 10 a.m. on field four. The play-in game will feature #4 Boone Central (10-11) vs. #5 Pierce (4-18) also at 10 a.m. on field three. The Boone/Pierce winner will face #1 Guardian Angels Central Catholic at 11:45 a.m. The Bluejays are 16-2 on the season.
The Wayne/O’Neill winner will next play at 1:30 p.m. in the championship game while the loser would play at 11:45 a.m. The third-place game is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
Wayne High will close out their regular season on Thursday, October 1 ahead of the conference tourney against GACC in West Point. JV competition will get underway at 5 followed by the varsity contest at 6:30 p.m.
Other conference teams in action before the weekend tournament will feature Boone Central vs. St. Paul on October 1; O’Neill will welcomed in Ord Thursday; Pierce vs. Polk County Thursday and GACC will host Wayne Thursday.
The Blue Devil softball team is also scheduled to open the Class B-6 Subdistrict next Monday and Tuesday, October 5 – 6. WHS will be joined by Crete (14-8); the NEN Vipers (17-4) and Schuyler (0-18).
Crete will compete in their conference tourney Thursday. NEN will also visit North Bend Thursday before ending their season with a double dual against Fort Calhoun and Highway 91 on Saturday hosted by West Point-Beemer. Schuyler will also compete in their conference tourney Thursday.
