WAYNE – After competing in back-to-back weeks of races, the Wayne State College women’s and men’s cross country team will be off for a week. But, the women’s program had an individual who was highlighted recently.
Sophomore Molly McCartney was named the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Women’s Cross Country Athlete of the Week. The league office in Burnsville, Minnesota released the information Tuesday afternoon.
McCartney and the Wildcats recently performed in the Briar Cliff Invitational on Saturday, October 6. The Athlete of the Week honor marks the first time that McCartney has received the award.
The Lawrence-Nelson HS graduate recorded a personal best time of 18:48.8 on the 5,000-meter course to finish ninth overall out of a field of 166 runners. She led Wayne State College to a sixth place team finish in the event.
Devan Shumway of Minot State was awarded the NSIC Men’s Cross Country Athlete of the Week honor.
The Wayne State College women’s and men’s cross country team will next compete on Saturday, October 20 at the Mount Marty Invitational in Yankton, South Dakota. WSC will take part in the NSIC Championships in Aberdeen, South Dakota on November 3 and the NCAA Central Regional Championships on November 17 in Joplin, Missouri.
