Mary Women Edge WSC In OT, Wildcat Men Win In Extras

WAYNE – As the month of January comes to an end the Wayne State College women’s and men’s basketball teams opened their home weekend hosting a pair of North Dakota schools.

From Rice Auditorium, WSC entertained University of Mary Friday night.

During the women’s game, both teams scored 13 points before University of Mary outscored WSC 15-9 in the second quarter to go up 28-22. Wayne State then chipped away at the deficit with a 26-22 third and 20-18 fourth. UMary tied the game late to force overtime tied at 68 all. The Marauders made two foul shots with just over a second left in OT to win 83-81. University of Mary improves to 15-9 (9-6 NSIC) while the ‘Cats fell to 14-7 (9-6 NSIC).

Erin Norling moves to 19th all-time in scoring (1,172) thanks to a 28-point performance with seven rebounds, four assists, two steals and three blocks (10-20 FG/4-6 3PT/4-4 FT). Halley Busse added 21 points and five assists (6-14 FG/5-10 3PT/4-4 FT) as Josey Ryan tallied 11 points and six assists (5-10 FG/1-3 3PT).

Other scoring came from Brittany Bongartz with nine points and 13 rebounds (100 career-blocks/sixth in program history), Autumn Mlinar tacked on five points, Lauren Zacharias poured in four points and Kylie Hammer finished with three points.

WSC shot 28-78 (35.9%) from the field, 12-30 (40%) from behind the arc and 13-14 (92.9%) at the foul line.

Four Marauders posted double figures led by Cassie Askvig with 25 points and eight rebounds, Macy Williams added 19 points, Lauren Rotunda tacked on 15 points and Megan Voit recorded 11 points.

The Marauder women finished 32-71 (45.1%) form the floor, 9-25 (36%) from the three-point line and 10-15 (66.7%) at the charity stripe.

 

In the men’s contest, Wayne State led 33-29 at the break before building a 16-point lead early in the second half. University of Mary came all the way back to outscore WSC 42-38 forcing overtime tied at 71-71. The ‘Cats then topped UMary 14-6 in overtime to win 85-77. Wayne State won their third straight to now sit 9-15 (6-9 NSIC) while the Marauders fell to 10-11 (5-10 NSIC).

Nick Ferrarini recorded 27 points and seven rebounds (11-19 FG/5-10 3PT) followed by Jordan Janssen who posted his 12th double-double of the season with 17 points and 12 rebounds to go along with four assists and four steals (6-15 FG/5-6 FT). Nate Mohr added 15 points (5-8 FG/3-5 3PT/2-2 FT).

Other scoring came from Ben Dentlinger with nine points and two blocks, Al’Tavius Jackson tallied seven points, Nate Thayer and Henry Penner both poured in four points and Isiah Burd tacked on two points.

WSC shot 32-65 (49.2%) from the field, 8-18 (44.4%) from behind the arc and 13-20 (65%) at the foul line.

University of Mary leaders were Trever Kaiser scoring 18 points as Wyatt Carr finished with 17 points.

The Marauder men finished 27-69 (39.1%) form the floor, 6-30 (20%) from the three-point line and 17-23 (73.9%) at the charity stripe.
