HOMER/RANDOLPH – After eight teams were eliminated from the Lewis & Clark Conference Volleyball Tournament over the weekend, four teams advanced to Monday night’s bracket play round.
Games in Homer saw #1 Wynot top Wakefield-Allen (25-22, 25-18) while #4 Laurel-Concord-Coleridge swept Hartington-Newcastle (25-18, 25-23). Wynot then won in five sets over LCC (25-18, 22-25, 25-16, 21-25, 15-13) to advance to the championship game while the consolation match saw the Trojans sweep Hartington-Newcastle (25-17, 25-22).
In the loss to Wynot, Alex Arenas recorded five kills and five digs followed by four kills and five digs from Jordyn Carr for Wakefield-Allen. Hayden Ekberg and Alli Jackson added three kills each as Carly Dickens finished with 14 set assists and three kills. Abby Heiman paced the team in digs with eight while Aishah Valenzuela tacked on seven digs.
From the win over HNS, Jackson and Ekberg both posted seven kills as Carr added five kills, 11 digs and three service aces. Dickens recorded 18 set assist and two kills. Valenzuela finished with a team-high 13 digs.
During the loss to LCC, Kayden Jueden recorded nine kills for Hartington-Newcastle followed by Abbe Morten with five kills. Brianna Hoping tallied 11 set assist and Alivia Morten finished with nine set assists.
In the loss to Wakefield-Allen, Jueden posted a team-high eight kills and three digs followed by Erin Folkers with three kills. Brianna Hopping added eight set assist and Erin Meisenheimer led the team in digs with four.
Matches held in Randolph, favored #2 Ponca over Osmond (25-15, 25-23) and #3 Winside swept Randolph (25-9, 25-21). Ponca then swept Winside to advance to the championship contest (25-16, 29-27, 25-15)
From Ponca’s win over Osmond, Josie Reid paced the team with 11 kills, three digs and three blocks followed by Kaci Day with eight kills and four digs. Ellie McAfee recorded a team-high eight digs as Morgan Nelson added 28 service aces.
In the sweep over Winside, double-double performers came from Kaci Day with 11 kills and 26 digs as well as Josie Reid with 10 kills and 25 digs. Other top dig leaders were Alyssa Crosgrove with 23, Ellie McAfee (19) and Meg Keller (17). Morgan Nelson finished with 34 set assists and eight digs. Reid and Bree Gill both tallied three blocks.
During Winside’s win over Randolph, Hope Cummins posted a team-high seven kills to go along with five digs and four service aces followed by Andi Bargstadt with five kills and a team-high 15 digs. McKenna Russell recorded a double-double with 12 set assists and 10 digs while Brooklyn Behmer finished with three kills, six set assists and seven digs.
From the Wildcat loss to Ponca, Cummins again led the team in kills with nine while adding three service aces followed by Bargstadt with eight kills and 14 digs. Russell tallied another eight kills, 13 set assists and five digs. Behmer tacked on a double-double with 18 set assists and 13 digs as Kati Topp finished with eight solo blocks, six kills and five digs. Jackie Escalante totaled 10 digs.
The 2019 Lewis & Clark Conference consolation and championship matches are scheduled for Tuesday at Laurel-Concord-Coleridge. The consolation match will feature LCC vs. Winside at 5:30 p.m. followed by Wynot vs. Ponca in the championship match.
