Late Rally For Fort Calhoun Allows Pioneers To Clinch One-Run Victory  

FORT CALHOUN – The Wayne High home baseball game with Fort Calhoun Monday evening was changed from a home contest to a road game due to field conditions at Hank Overin Field.

A Class B high school varsity baseball game for Wayne High from nearly a month ago was rescheduled twice and after changing location, the winless Pioneers played host to the Wayne High Blue Devils.

WHS started off strong with a four-run third inning before giving up two runs in the fourth. Up 4-2, following a scoreless fifth inning, the Blue Devils gave up another two runs in the sixth before allowing one more run in the seventh to fall, 5-4. With the victory, Fort Calhoun picks up their first win of the season, now 1-7 while Wayne High falls to 4-5.

Three Blue Devils accounted for a hit each led by sophomore Josh Lutt with a single and run scored. Sophomores Trevor DeBoer and Blake Bartos both singled. Senior Zane Jackson, sophomore Gunnar Jorgensen and freshman Jacob Kneifl each scored a run.

Lutt suffered the loss in an inning and a third allowing an earned run off of three hits while striking out three batters and walking two. DeBoer started the game and worked five innings allowing four runs (three earned) off of six hits while striking out three batters and walking another two.

Wayne High is next scheduled to play at (3-2) Central City/Fullerton on Tuesday, April 17 that was rescheduled from this past Saturday. Varsity action will get underway at 4:30 p.m. from Kernel Field.
